The film is set in present-day Leipzig, more precisely in Grünau, a large prefabricated housing estate in the west of the city. The actors actually live here, and they enjoy living in this neighborhood, which unjustly enjoys a less than favorable reputation. Therefore, unlike in many other film productions, the district is not portrayed as cold, forbidding, dilapidated, run-down, and ugly. Instead, Grünau is presented in warm colors as what both the actors and the film characters perceive it to be: their livable and therefore beautiful home, their neighborhood, where they feel comfortable, where their friends and relatives live, and where they feel at home. Other filming locations include the neighborhoods of Plagwitz and Schleußig, which border Grünau.
